Extension Projects
If you would like to work on an extension project as a challenge, please choose one or two from the options below. You may work individually, with a partner, or with a small group. If you have any questions, please ask Mrs. Ryder. When you are ready to present to the class, schedule a day with Mrs. Ryder and she will add your presentation to the project calendar.
Building Vocabulary
Many English words used to describe weather came from other languages. For example, the word typhoon came from a Chinese word meaning "great wind." Find and map the origins of other weather words.
1. Make a list of the following weather words: tornado, hurricane, monsoon, cyclone, tsunami. Use a dictionary or encyclopedia to discover where these words came from.
2. Write the weather words on sticky notes. Place the note on the country from which it came. Write the country on the sticky note as well. |
Writing Forecasts
Write a one-page weather report that summarizes an imaginary day's weather and gives the next day's forecast.
1. Vary the length of your sentences as your write. Create longer sentences as you write. Create longer compound sentences by using conjunctions such as and, or, and but to join shorter sentences together.
2. Check your weather report for correct grammar and punctuation.
3. Trade papers with a partner. Underline each compound sentence and circle each conjunction that you find. Write the letter W by each conjunction that joins words in a sentence, and write S by each conjunction that joins sentences. |
