Extension Projects

If you would like to work on an extension project as a challenge, please choose one or two from the options below. You may work individually, with a partner, or with a small group. If you have any questions, please ask Mrs. Ryder. When you are ready to present to the class, schedule a day with Mrs. Ryder and she will add your presentation to the project calendar.

Write a Travel Brochure

Use information from the selection to create a travel brochure for a tour of the world's volcanoes. Explain where the tour will go and what volcanoes you will see. Make it neat and colorful.

Tips:

1. Fold a sheet of paper into three panels. You may also choose to use Microsoft Publisher.

2. Describe the tour on the inside panels and illustrate the outside panels.

3. Check your spelling and capitalize all proper nouns.

Create a Fact File

With classmates, create a volcano fact file. Using the information in Volcanoes, each person chooses a country or state, such as Iceland or Hawaii, and lists the volcanoes for that place. Please include a brief description of the volcanoes and a small map.

Bonus: Find information about the volcanoes of a country not mentioned in the selection, such as Italy or Japan. Add a fact file about that place.

Sentences Con-STRUCT-ion

How many words do you know that contain the word roots struct and rupt? write sentences that show your knowledge.

1. With a partner, make a list of words that that combine struct and rupt with the prefixes de-, dis-, con-, e-, inter-, in-, and re- and the suffixes -ive, -or, -ion, and -ure. Try to think of eight words.

2. Discuss the meaning of each word, using a dictionary if needed.

3. Divide the list with your partner and write a sentence for each of your words.

Building Vocabulary

The word volcano comes from the name of the Roman god of fire, Vulcan. Many other words have origins in Roman or Greek mythology- the stories they told about their ancestors and heroes.

1. On a poster board, make three columns. (See Mrs. Ryder for an example). Write these headings: Word, Character, and Meaning.

2. Write these words in the first column: atlas, jovial, mercurial, panic, siren, tantalize, titanic, and volcano.

3. Use a dictionary or encyclopedia to find the Roman or Greek mythological characters who inspired these words. Write their names in the second column.

4. Write the meaning of each word in the third column.

Create a Poster

Use information from Seymour Simon's Volcanoes to make a poster. You might show how magma rises to erupt as lava, or show the four different kinds of volcanoes.
